WHO 사무총장, 한의약의 현대적 통합, 글로벌 보건의 미래 'K-MEX'에 이례적 축전

서울특별시한의사회가 주최하는 ‘K-MEX(한의약 및 통합의약 국제산업박람회)’가 세계 보건 기구의 수장으로부터 뜨거운 지지를 받으며 화려하게 막을 올린다. 테워드로스 아드하놈 거브러여수스(Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus) WHO 사무총장은 이번 엑스포에 축전을 보내, 한의약이 가진 전통의 가치와 현대적 기술의 결합이 인류의 보건 증진에 핵심적인 역할을 할 것이라고 평가했다.

거브러여수스 사무총장은 축전을 통해 대한민국 한의약이 가진 오랜 역사와 생명력을 높이 평가했다. 그는 "한국은 전통의학의 길고 풍부한 전통을 가진 국가로, 이는 오늘날에도 여전히 많은 이들의 삶과 보건 의료에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다"며 서두를 뗐다.

특히 그는 ‘WHO 글로벌 전통의학 전략 2025-2034’를 언급하며, "전통의학은 일차 보건 의료를 강화하고 보편적 건강 보장을 추진하는 데 있어 갈수록 중요한 기여자로 인정받고 있다"고 강조했다.

이번 축전에서 WHO는 전통의학을 현대 의료 체계에 책임감 있게 통합하는 ‘통합 의학(Integrative Medicine)’의 개념을 공식적으로 정의하며, K-MEX의 취지가 이러한 글로벌 우선순위와 정확히 일치한다고 밝혔다.

K-MEX, ‘디지털 한의약’으로 세계 보건의 패러다임 바꾼다

이번 K-MEX의 핵심 테마는 ‘한의약의 현대적 기술 통합’이다. 이는 WHO가 지향하는 증거 기반의 혁신 및 규제 강화 전략과 궤를 같이한다. 엑스포 현장에서는 AI 기반 진단 기기, 디지털 헬스케어 솔루션, 현대화된 한약 제제 등 한의약의 과학적 성과들이 대거 공개된다.

거브러여수스 사무총장은 "국가들이 더 포용적이고 탄력적이며 사람 중심적인 보건 체계를 구축함에 있어, 과학과 안전, 윤리, 형평성에 기반한 전통의학의 역할은 매우 중요하다"며, K-MEX가 보여주는 한의학의 미래지향적 행보에 격려를 보냈다.

박성우 서울특별시한의사회장은 "WHO 사무총장의 축전은 한의약이 단순히 한국의 전통을 넘어 세계인의 건강을 책임지는 핵심 의료 자산임을 국제적으로 인정받은 것"이라며 "K-MEX를 통해 한의약의 디지털화, 과학화, 그리고 세계화를 가속화하여 글로벌 시장에서의 경쟁력을 증명하겠다"고 포부를 밝혔다.

이번 K-MEX는 국내외 유수의 의료진과 헬스케어 기업들이 참여하여 한의약의 최신 트렌드를 공유하고, 글로벌 비즈니스 매칭을 통해 한의약 산업의 해외 진출을 돕는 교두보 역할을 수행한다.

Like many countries, the Republic of Korea has a long and rich tradition of traditional medicine, which continues to play a vital role in healthcare and in the lives of many people. Traditional medicine is increasingly recognized as an important contributor to primary healthcare and to advancing universal health coverage.

This recognition is reflected in the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025 to 2034. The strategy provides a clear framework to strengthen evidence, innovation, regulation, and the responsible integration of traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine into health systems. For the first time, it formally defines integrative medicine as an interdisciplinary evidence-based approach to holistic health.

The theme of this exposition, highlighting the integration of Korean medicine with modern technologies, aligns closely with these global priorities. As countries work to build more inclusive, resilient, and people-centered health systems, traditional medicine has an important role to play, guided by science, safety, ethics, and equity.

WHO stands ready to work with member states and partners to advance this agenda in support of health for all. I congratulate you once again on this important initiative, and I wish you a successful exposition.
